Mitigation for Cultural Collections: Risk
Assessment and Crisis CommunicationConducting a vulnerability analysis and risk assessment gives
institutions the vital information necessary to help minimize the likelihood of
a disaster. In this workshop, participants will learn how these tools fit into
an institution's emergency planning and how to conduct an analysis of risk and
vulnerability, essential for evaluating the types of emergencies that could
affect collections. A presentation by a crisis communications expert will be
included to address public relations strategies for emergency situations. Speakers:       Julie

Cultural Collections: Emergency Preparedness and Response  Participants in this workshop will learn how to assign responsibilities
for key emergency preparedness roles, write or update an emergency plan, use
practical decision-making skills during an emergency, set pre- and
post-disaster action priorities for collections, and “exercise”
their institutions’ emergency plans. There will also be discussion of
projects of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force, including  Speakers:       Julie

Long   Attending both workshops is not
required, however it is recommended. Individually, the
workshops will provide valuable information; together they will provide a
framework to help institutions understand, address, and prepare for
emergencies. These workshops are intended for staff who are
involved in collections care activities or have responsibility for the safety
of collections, including librarians, archivists, curators, collections
managers, stewards of historic house museums, site and facility managers, and
security and safety staff.  Disaster planning encompasses all facets of an
institution’s operations and requires the involvement of all staff. Therefore,
sending more than one person from an institution is encouraged.  LOCATION & TIMES University of  Classroom II Kress Wing Entrance*

Page, the lead speaker for
both workshops, is Preservation Librarian for the  Michael
Smith, Ph.D., is Director of La Salle University’s
graduate program in Professional Communication and teaches undergraduate and
graduate courses in public relations, organizational communication, and
conflict.  Smith has taught in La Salle’s Master’s programs in  Jane
Long, Vice President for Emergency Programs at Heritage
Preservation, has served as director of the Heritage Emergency National Task
Force since it was formed in 1995 by Heritage Preservation and the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. She is co-author of  The Conservation Center for Art and
Historic Artifacts (CCAHA)
