LC Doings, Preservation Research Agenda
and High Density Storage Facility

Program Description:
The Library of Congress has a high density storage facility for book
and special formats located in Maryland. This storage facility is being
constructed in phases so that additional storage units or modules can be
added when necessary. The first two modules are ready and nearly filled
and the next four are under construction. Join us to hear about the
design of the building, the selection, preparation, logistics and move
of materials, and lessons learned in moving over 3 million volumes to
this state of the art high density storage facility.
The Preservation Directorate’s Research and Testing Laboratory has
been in existence for over 25 years. A recent generous infusion of $2
million in funds created a newly expanded and up-to-date technology for
testing and research. Learn what new projects are in the offing, what
publications will soon be available, and how to provide input on what
research you feel is most needed for the preservation research agenda.
