We don’t have a formal, written
policy, but we have a protocol that works well. Our exhibit designer runs all items by the
conservation staff and we are “the deciders.” ;-) He
generally brings items to us as he decides to use them, with all identified about
6 months in advance. That gives us time to do the work (or send it to
another conservator if it’s outside our area of expertise), and gives him
to create the digital facsimiles that will be used in the online and traveling versions
of the exhibition. [Examples at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/exhibits/]
It’s not formal, but it’s been
a hassle-free experience in the almost-eight years I’ve been here. Lisa Lisa L. Fox, Senior

[mailto:kate.contakos@xxxxxxxx] I
am reviewing the process of our internal exhibition procedures and will
appreciate any input. My focus is on materials being exhibited in-house only,
not loan materials. Specifically, does your institution have a formal policy in
place for reviewing materials prior to exhibition to determine items in need of
conservation treatments? If so, who does the reviewing? How much time before
the opening of the exhibit are materials reviewed? Please
feel free to contact me off-line. Thanks in advance! kate *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Kate
