Hello - Please post the following to your list:
Maps - you gotta love 'em. But they can present challenges for sharing with patrons. Come and hear about successful map digitization projects.
Whether you are a large ARL or a local Public Library you’re likely to have at least a few, if not a few hundreds of these – MAPS! Even better, your library might be one of the few, if not the only holding institution for a particular map.
On the other hand it’s a format that is not easily shared with your library’s patrons. They are usually oversized and easily damaged when handled. They can’t circulate and most don’t lend themselves to ad-hoc copying.
One great way to overcome this dilemma is to present these maps in digital format.
Join us for an Introduction into Map Digitization at ALA Midwinter hosted by the OCLC Preservation Service Centers:
Saturday, January 12, 10:30 – noon
Courtyard by Marriott, Downtown, Salon II
The program will showcase two successful map digitization projects:
University of Colorado, Boulder: Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps
Gettysburg College: John H.W. Stuckenberg Map Collection
Representatives for both projects will explain the key objectives and methodologies they applied in building their digital map collections and promoting their use. OCLC Preservation Service Center staff will present guidelines for map digitization and highlight options to bring the scanned maps online. This program will give you a fundamental understanding of the technical terms involved including file formats and basics of GIS referencing.
