An Introduction to Archival Management: Appraisal, Arrangement, and Description

Managing archival collections can be a daunting task.  Whether an archives has procedures in place or is just being established, day-to-day decisions about the management of the collections must be made.  Program participants will be introduced to theories and practical applications that will help them make thoughtful choices about what materials to accession into their collections and how to physically organize the materials.  Developing finding aids and other tools for increased collection access will also be addressed.

Speaker: Beth Bensman, a Certified Archivist and private consultant, has taught several workshops on the care and management of archival collections.  In her past positions, Bensman has worked as a Technical Archivist, a University Archivist, and most recently as Manager of Public Services and Outreach at the Presbyterian Historical Society where she was responsible for overseeing reference services and coordinating outreach activities.

Archives Preservation: Maintaining and Protecting Collections

Archival repositories around the country hold priceless and irreplaceable documents, photographs, books, and scrapbooks.  The task of preserving these materials often falls to those with little formalized training.  This program will introduce participants to the fundamentals of archival preservation.  Topics covered will include the nature of archival materials that affect preservation and access to collections; environment; storage materials; storage solutions; handling; reformatting options; and conservation of archival materials.

Speaker: Hilary A. Kaplan is a Senior Conservator at the National Archives and Records Administration.  She received her M.S. and Certificate in Library and Archives Conservation from Columbia University’s School of Library Service Conservation Education Program and is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation.  Her interest in archives preservation has resulted in numerous publications, presentations, and assessments.  Kaplan frequently presents archives preservation workshops and classes for organizations across the country.
