COLLECTIONS Presented by the April 17 & 18, 2008 Cosponsored by The Johns Held at ABOUT THE PROGRAM Proper archival
procedures and preservation actions enable safe and effective management of
archival collections. Attendees at this two-day program will gain insight
into management and preservation activities that will improve intellectual
control over collections, increase collections accessibility, and assist in
long-term preservation initiatives. Thursday, April 17 An
Introduction to Archival Management: Appraisal, Arrangement, and Description Managing archival
collections can be a daunting task. Whether an archives has procedures in
place or is just being established, day-to-day decisions about the management
of the collections must be made. Program participants will be introduced
to theories and practical applications that will help them make thoughtful
choices about what materials to accession into their collections and how to
physically organize the materials. Developing finding aids and other
tools for increased collection access will also be addressed. Speaker: Beth Bensman, a Certified Archivist and private
consultant, has taught several workshops on the care and management of archival
collections. In her past positions, Bensman has worked as a Technical
Archivist, a University Archivist, and most recently as Manager of Public
Services and Outreach at the Presbyterian Historical Society where she was
responsible for overseeing reference services and coordinating outreach

Preservation: Maintaining and Protecting Collections Archival repositories around the country hold priceless and
irreplaceable documents, photographs, books, and scrapbooks. The task of
preserving these materials often falls to those with little formalized
training. This program will introduce participants to the fundamentals of
archival preservation. Topics covered will include the nature of archival
materials that affect preservation and access to collections; environment;
storage materials; storage solutions; handling; reformatting options; and
conservation of archival materials. Speaker: Hilary A. Kaplan is
a Senior Conservator at the
National Archives and Records Administration. She received her M.S. and
