| Preservation Review Librarian Harvard College Library Preservation and Imaging Services Requisition Number 34853 Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Conservation Services, the incumbent identifies and retrieves damaged and deteriorated materials from the circulating collection of Widener Library; assesses and sorts these items into work flows for appropriate conservation attention and treatment. Following principles of collections conservation, collaborates with staff throughout the Library to ensure that damaged materials from this heavily used collection are routed through a work flow that results in conservation treatment, reformatting, or replacement. The Conservation Services and Imaging Services divisions make up the preservation department of the Harvard College Library. Reviews, selects and sorts at risk items from Widener Library¿s circulated materials. Tracks materials entering and leaving Conservation Services. Directs materials into work flows for conservation treatment, reproduction, rehousing, or other preservation strategy, taking into consideration format, condition, and trends and patterns of use. Maintains a balance between needs of collections with the depth of preservation resources and preservation priorities. Coordinates work with Access Services, Technical Services, and departmental libraries. Resolves bibliographic issues, interprets and edits ALEPH records as appropriate, and serves as the resource on bibliographic concerns for the conservation lab staff. Maintains regular communication with the reformatting, binding, and shelf preparation groups. Participates in preservation initiatives, including project management, long-range program planning, disaster recovery, preservation training and outreach. Assists in the management of conservation services. Serves as IT Liaison and HR Liaison for the conservation lab and binding and shelf preparation. Serves on the Library Collections Emergency Team (LCET). The Preservation Review Librarian supervises one half-time Library Assistant and occasional students and temps. This individual will use a range of conservation equipment. This equipment is highly specialized and many pieces require safety precautions because of high temperatures or sharp blades. Must occasionally lift and move up to 40 lbs, and manipulate book trucks. Job involves exposure to dust and mold. The work associated with this position is performed in an office adjacent to a conservation laboratory and occasionally in the lab. Basic Qualifications: MLS with a specialization in preservation. Two years of preservation experience required. Knowledge of preservation principles and practices, binding structures, book manufacturing industry, and commercial library binding technology. Working knowledge of standard software applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, required. Experience with integrated library system (ILS) software required. Additional Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to prepare reports, document procedures, and conduct and interpret surveys. Experience with ALEPH preferred. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to establish priorities and achieve goals. Ability to plan, organize, and direct work flows in a production setting; to train, supervise, motivate, and evaluate staff; to encourage team work and staff development; to initiate and adapt to change; to analyze and solve problems; to be flexible and work collaboratively. Ability to communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing.
