Beinecke Rare Book and
Manuscript Library The Beinecke Library, one of
the world's largest buildings devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts,
is Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and
rare books. The Beinecke collections are internationally known and heavily used
by scholars from around the world. For further information about the Beinecke
Library, consult the library's web site at: http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke. General Purpose Under the direction of the
Head of Technical Services at Beinecke and in close collaboration with the Head
and other staff of the Yale University Library Preservation Department, the
Preservation Coordination Librarian plans and manages preservation activities
within the Beinecke Library. Responsibilities Develops and maintains
preservation policies and procedures for the Beinecke Library and ensures that
all activities are consistent with Library-wide preservation policies and program
objectives. Works with Head of Technical Services, curators, the
Librarian for Access Services and Collection Management, other unit heads in
Technical Services, to identify preservation priorities for the Beinecke.
Plans, negotiates, and manages preservation re-formatting and conservation
treatment for a wide range of Beinecke materials through both in-house services
and outside vendors. Designs and execute preservation assessments and
surveys of the Beinecke library and its collections in collaboration with the
Preservation Dept. as part of a larger program to survey the university
library’s collections. Supervises support staff, currently 1
FTE. In collaboration with the Preservation Department, coordinates
environmental monitoring activities and provides interpretation and reports to
Beinecke and the Preservation Department. Advises on exhibition practice,
review materials, and address conservation needs and installation requirements
for both in-house exhibitions and loans in collaboration with the Conservation
Lab. Plans and oversees major stacks preservation maintenance activities
in collaboration with the Librarian for Access Services and Collection
Management. Educates staff in preservation issues. Trains and
supervises students, library assistants, and other professional staff as
necessary. Serves as a resource for the Beinecke on digital preservation
initiatives in the University Library. Coordinates emergency response
planning for the Beinecke Library in collaboration with Beinecke’s Head
of Security and Facilities Manager as well as the Preservation Department.
Updates and keeps current the emergency response plan; monitors and maintains
emergency equipment and supplies; trains staff in emergency response
procedures. Assists in developing and keeping current the Beinecke
Library’s preservation information resources. Serves as liaison
with Yale University Library Preservation Department. Participates with
the other unit heads in Technical Services in policy planning of technical
services activities for the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
Participates actively in the Library's management, assessment, training, and
development programs; contributes to implementing the mission of the Library;
serves on Library and University committees as appropriate; and is active
professionally. May be required to assist with disaster recovery
situations. Qualifications Master’s degree in
Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school
and advance certificate in preservation administration. Significant work
experience in preservation administration may replace certificate. Demonstrated
knowledge of book and paper conservation, and the history of book
structure. Demonstrated professional accomplishments and a minimum of one
year professional library experience are required for appointment at the
Librarian I level; Librarian II level requires a minimum of two years
professional library experience; and appointment at Librarian III level
requires a minimum of five years professional library experience. Minimum three
years experience with preservation activities; may be combination of
professional and/or para-professional experience. Experience in
developing, designing and carrying out a wide variety of surveys and
assessments. Demonstrated knowledge of current developments within the
library, archival and preservation profession. Demonstrated ability to
work collegially with a wide range of staff. Preferred: Experience
working in a special collections environment. Preferred: Experience with
audio-visual preservation. Thorough knowledge of the wide range of
preservation and conservation issues and current trends, including digital
preservation, at the national and international level. Excellent written
and oral communication skills. Strong project management and
interpersonal skills. Strong analytic skills and problem solving
abilities. Preferred: experience with paper and/or book
conservation. Preferred: knowledge of at least one Western European
language. Preferred: supervisory experience. Salary and Benefits Rank and competitive salary
