The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative and energetic  
professional for the position of Head, Preservation Services.  The  
Head of Preservation Services will lead the Library in creating  
programs and services that ensure the longevity and utility of our  
circulating and special collections for current and future users of  
the library.

Preservation Services supports the teaching and research programs of  
the University of Virginia by facilitating and preserving access to  
the collections of the University of Virginia Library. Units within  
Preservation Services include Library Binding and Shelf Preparation,  
Audio and Moving Image Preservation, and Conservation. Preservation  
activities at U.Va. are undergoing an exciting period of growth.   
With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the U.Va. Library  
will hire a Conservator for University Library Collections, build a  
conservation lab and develop a program for the treatment of general  
and special collections. Capital campaign efforts are underway to  
establish an endowment that supports ongoing preservation efforts.   
Preservation Services is a department within Content Management  
Services and it partners with units throughout the library to set  
standards and policies for preservation, participate in special  
projects, and educate via preservation programming.
Environment:  The University of Virginia Library (http:// 
www.lib.virginia.edu) is a leader in innovative customer service, the  
development of digital library initiatives and infrastructure, and is  
recognized for the strength and variety of its collections.  The  
Library system consists of twelve libraries, with independent  
libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The libraries  
support 13,000 undergraduates, 6,500 graduate students and 1,600  
teaching faculty. The University and the Library have a strong  
commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. The  
Neoclassical buildings of founder Thomas Jefferson's Academical

Responsibilities:  Reporting to the Director of Content Management  
Services, the Head of Preservation Services

- oversees administrative operations for the preservation of  
materials in all formats for the Library;

- coordinates the operational components of the Library’s  
preservation program including initiatives such as collections  
disaster planning and user education programs on preservation issues;

- directly supervises one professional, 3 paraprofessionals and is  
responsible for the effective performance of student assistants;

- pursues and administers grant proposals for preservation projects.

Qualifications:

Required: Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an  
ALA-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree.

Preferred: Candidates should have a minimum of two years experience  
in management of preservation units. They should possess broad  
understanding of and experience in preservation activities in an  
academic research library setting and knowledge of emerging trends in  
preservation including both conservation and sustaining collections  
in a digital environment. They should demonstrate organizational  
skills in planning, prioritizing, and achieving goals; supervision of  
a diverse staff of all levels; experience managing budgets and  
managing multiple projects. Candidates should possess a high level of  
commitment to the field of preservation as evidenced by continuing  
education or by related professional activities or research.  They  
should possess excellent oral and written communication skills  
including presentation experience and grant writing ability.

Salary and Benefits:  Competitive depending on qualifications. This  
position has Administrative and Professional faculty status with  
excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and
