S. ALCTS Newspaper Interest Group Saturday, January 24, 2009. 1:30-3:30 pm Colorado Convention Center,
Room 706 - - - - Please join us to learn about state, national, and
international efforts to preserve and provide on-line access to historical
newspapers. Agenda We are very happy to have noted author Jennifer 8. Lee as
our guest speaker. Ms. Lee is the author of the best selling Fortune
Cookie Chronicles and she will talk about her use of current and
historical newspaper resources-both analog and digital-while researching her
book. We may even find out the true story about General Tso’s Chcken! But there’s more: Teri Sierra, Assistant Chief – Serials and Government
Publications Division, the Library of Congress, will provide an update on
what’s going on at the Library of Congress in the realm of newspaper
preservation and access. Barbara Paulson, Senior Program Officer, the Division of Preservation and Access, National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will report on NEH activities as they related to newspapers. Colleagues may be particularly curious to hear the latest on the NDNP.
Iris Haney, President, Unlimited Priorities, will provide
some exciting news about the future release of Accessible Archives’ new
digital edition of the Virginia Gazette. Mary McCarthy of the Colorado Virtual Library at the
Colorado State Library will provide a brief description of newspaper activities
in the Colorado region. Carolyn Ciesla, ICON Program Coordinator, Center for
Research Libraries, will provide a brief update on the ICON project as well as
CRL’s work with NewsBank and the World Newspaper Archive digitization
efforts. I hope there will be time to hear from our colleagues
attending the meeting about activities related to newspaper preservation and
access. And everyone is encouraged to discuss local, national, and
