Libraries are seeking applicants for Head of Preservation, a library
faculty
position. The successful candidate will be responsible for a program
focused on the preservation of the Libraries’ collections in all
formats,
with responsibilities for conservation, binding and end processing, and
digital
preservation. In addition, he or she will assess and redesign the
existing program to meet the expanding needs of the Libraries’ unique
special
collections in all formats, including digital objects. The vacancy

This
vacancy announcement was
previously posted in September 2008, but, shortly thereafter, a hiring
freeze
was imposed by the University System of Maryland for all
state-supported
positions. In February 2009, approval
for an exception was granted for recruitment and hiring of the Head of
Preservation.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of
Preservation oversees an evolving program for preservation of the
Libraries’
collections. Responsible for planning, implementation, and
administration of
conservation/preservation program that encompasses all aspects of
material
treatments and is concerned with all media and formats (including
print,
digital, microforms, manuscripts, photographs, realia, and other
non-print
media). Coordinates and facilitates department activities, facilitates
organizational communications, fosters an environment of shared
responsibility,
and develops and promotes strategic plans and vision. Will assess and
redesign
the Libraries’ preservation program to meet the expanding needs of the
Libraries’ unique special collections in all formats, including digital
objects. Provides leadership through
active participation on teams and committees at the department,
division, Libraries,
and University level and within the profession.
Works under the direction of the Assistant Director of the
Technical
Services Division.
QUALIFICATIONS AND
EXPERIENCE: Required:
ALA-accredited
Master’s degree in library science or equivalent professional degree
and
experience in the conservation/preservation field. Five years of
professional
experience in an academic or research library, including two years
managing
preservation or conservation staff and at least one year and preferably
as many
as three years of relevant experience with digital resources. Training
and
experience in conservation/preservation treatment, practices, issues,
and
trends. Demonstrated knowledge of
life cycle management of digital assets.
Excellent organizational, management, and supervisory skills. Strong public service orientation. Demonstrated
ability to work effectively and
creatively with administrators, faculty, students, and library staff in
a
dynamic, rapidly changing environment.
Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication
skills.
Preferred:
Demonstrated success in writing grant proposals.

is appointed to
Librarian Faculty Ranks as established by the University System of
Maryland
Board of Regents. Rank at appointment is based on the successful
applicant’s
