Please provide a brief narrative description of the preservation program, and describe specific preservation projects being undertaken by the Library and their anticipated duration.
Cornell University Department of Preservation and Conservation
The Department of Preservation and Conservation, founded in 1985, is a central division of the University Library and serves all the University Libraries conservation and general policy needs. The Department also serves the twelve endowed libraries of the University by processing all new, unbound material, repairing books damaged by reader use, and processing materials for the commercial binder. The four New York State-funded libraries at Cornell process their own materials, and the Mann Library of Agriculture and Life Sciences has a preservation unit that is administratively separate, but which operates under the general aegis of the Department.
Current grant-funded production and research projects include: Icelandic Collection, microfilming and conservation treatment, funded by NEH (ending December 1997); French Revolution, conservation treatment, funded by Title II-C (ending August 1996); Digital to Microfilm research, funded by NEH (ending March 1996); Agricultural and Environmental materials, microfilming by the Mann Library, funded by Title II-C (ending December 1997); Making of America, digital imaging, funded by Culpeper and Mellon Foundation (ongoing); various projects conducted by the Department and the Mann Library funded by New York State.
Current education/training projects include: Central New York Technician Training Program, funded by New York State (ending March 1998); Digital Imaging Workshops of one duration, initially funded by the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Delmas Foundation, but now self-supporting; ongoing training/education/conservation treatment programs in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, funding from R.J. Reynolds Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, Delmas Foundation, Open Society for Burma Foundation, the Government of the Netherlands, and others.
