The Society of California Archivists, California State University Northridge Library, and the LA as Subject Project of the USC Archival Research Center

proudly present a Southern California Winter Workshop

Audio Preservation: Moving the Sounds of the Past into the Future

According to the recent surveys, 80% of audio archive content is at risk. Archives and historical societies have legacy recordings in many varied formats, discs, and tape. Some analog equipment is already extinct and some carriers are reaching critical levels of degradation, challenging archivists and collection managers to transfer information as quickly as possible to alternative media, or unique heritage and commercially valuable material will be lost. This workshop will feature archival and engineering experts presenting up-to-date information on preservation, restoration, and intellectual property issues involved in managing audio archives.

Speakers:
· Richard L. Hess, Broadcast engineer and expert on tape restoration.
· Lance Bowling, Owner of Cambria Master Recordings and Archives, specializing in Southern California's musical past.
· Anthony Seeger, Professor, Department of Ethnomusicology, UCLA; previously Curator of the Folkways Collection and Director of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings at the Smithsonian Institution, 1988 - 2000.
· Louise Spear, Archivist for the Ethnomusicology Archive at UCLA.
