Re: arsclist polypropylene and tyvek liners
ANSI/PIMA standard IT9.25-1998 "Photography-Optical disk media-Storage"
addresses the storage and housing of optical discs. This is also an ISO
standard ISO/TC 42/SC N4335.
In section 6.1 it reads: "Container shall be resistant to impact, moisture
and dust intrusion. Containers made of paper or cardboard shall not be
used. Containers shall be designed in such a way that neither the disc data
or label surface is in contact with the container when the container is
stored in its proper vertical position. Containers shall not be able to be
deformed, or mechanically compromised, in the defined storage conditions.
The container lid shall be capable of being latched, attached, or locked to
prevent accidental opening.
Plastics such as polystyrene, polypropylene, and polycarbonate are suitable
for storage housing applications. Prolonged exposure to strong light,
including fluorescent and incandescent lighting, causes yellowing of
polystyrene plastics, sometimes accompanied by crazing. Polystyrene and
polypropylene break down in sunlight or ultraviolet (UV). Foam rubber and
plastics such as cellulosics, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and highly
plasticized materials shall be avoided."
This section basically describes a jewel box. It also specifically
recommends against highly plasticized materials, of which vinyl is one.
While tyvek is inert, it does touch the disc surface which is recommended
against. I don't know the details of the standards making process and why
this standard came out of PIMA (which makes photography and imaging
standards), but if you read the whole standard they are essentially talking
about audio CDs, CD-ROMs, Photo-CDs and other familiar optical discs.
