Re: [ARSCLIST] AW: [ARSCLIST] Advice for filtering surface noise
Otto,
Two observations :
1 .) If you aren't using a device that uses the stereo signal for noise
cancellation you MUST play the records in mono or else you are inducing an
order of magnitude more noise than you would in mono. Whether the signal is
summed at the cartridge or in the preamp (or after) it needs to be summed to
cancel out the noise picked up by a stereo cartridge playing a mono groove.
2.) If your budget allows, you should consider using a different cleaning
device. The Nitty Gritty does an acceptable job of cleaning records but I've
noticed a significant improvement in noise reduction (even on 78s) since
switching to a Loricraft machine. They are also very fast, quiet, and
extremely durable and get the disc extremely clean in comparison to Nitty
Gritty, VPI and other cleaning machines that use a slot type vacuum for
cleaning. They're $1,900 for the basic version so they're not cheap but IMO
they're worth every penny, ESPECIALLY if you have a high volume of cleaning
to do.
As for the Packburn device, I have no experience with it. KABUSA makes a
device that is fairly inexpensive ($495) that they claim outperforms the
Packburn. It's called the Souvenir GTX and may fit your needs. (

Thank you for the answers.
I would like to do both.
Listening to the 78s and transfer them to DAT.
Cleaning records and different sizes of styli are not the problems for me.
I have twenty-three styli (both conical and elliptical) and a Nitty Gritty
model 2.5 Fi MKII.
I will try to play the records in stereo.
I wouldn't like to use any computer.

Have somebody experiences with the Packburn reducer

Hello Otto,
I suppose the first question I have is: What is the end product of your
playback of the records? In other words, are you just listening to the 78's
in real time, or do want to copy them and clean them up to final digital or
magnetic analogue copies?
If it's in real time, the clean up tools are different than if you are
digitizing to a computerized program.
