Most turntables have their own cables, don't extend them, mount the
preamp close to the TT. It is very low level and high impedance and the
capacitance is important too. Keep it short!
If that is inconvenient, consider putting together a simple RIAA preamp
of your own. There are a couple of circuits (some years old, but parts
should be available) on the Files page of the CD-R side of my WWW site.
Either is best run with a battery - no power connection, so no hum from
that source.
NOTE: If you do have hum, don't forget to isolate it to conductive or
radiative; they are solved in different ways.
