Here is another intriguing new possibility, still expensive, and limited to
one microphone:

But I could see "mini flash recorders" that are essentially a small flash
card reader with an XLR female connector that you just plug into your
favourite microphone, the way some wireless transmitters are. Surely
something like that must be in the works somewhere.

Also, see the new ikey that works not only with iPods, but (supposedly) any
USB drive, and now has mic inputs:

Surely future archivists will see more of these cards; hopefully there will
be readers to upload them to a PC. I am comforted that most card readers
seem to be multi-compatible.
