I understand that this fellow was expensing the Smithsonian
for repairs to his home because he turned down the "official
residence" they provide (the existence of which came as a
surprise to me, a Smithsonian member).  He occasionally
conducted Smithsonian fundraising events there.  Fair enough,
in concept.  But if you want to head the most prestigeous
archive in the world, one which nonetheless is always in
need of more funding, you need to have an appreciation of
how your actions appear to the public which is footing the
bill.  Even if he had all the right in the world to that
expense money, legally and morally, it still *looks bad*
to be taking all that on top of what is a rather generous
salary to begin with.  The honor is in serving in such a
vital and historic organization - it's not a "Career Ladder"
job.  If he didn't understand that, he had no business being
there in the first place.
