Hi Peter,

Your best bet is the following: SF Muni N or T/K line >> Caltrain >> 
Palo Alto/Stanford.  The Palo Alto Caltrain station is on El Camino 
Real, very well marked on Google Maps, and Stanford provides a free 
shuttle from the station to the campus.  All three systems run fairly 
regularly.  BART only goes halfway down the peninsula.
