Hi Bob:

I've never had problems with Windows Media Player as far as playing CD's. The only DSP I know of 
that can't be disabled is the volume control, which I generally keep at 80-85% to avoid clipping the 
output stage of the soundcard. However, a very good and low-overhead Windows player is called just 
"Player." It doesn't seem to be supported anymore, I guess a further sign of the road down for CD's.

In Windows, iTunes does seem to have big issues with both WAV and CD audio. It seems to convert to 
Quicktime on the fly and play thru the Quicktime engine, to the degradation of the sound quality. On 
my computer, while I use iTunes to rip to MP3 and sync with my iPod, my default player for CD audio, 
WAV and even MP3 due to its low overhead and quick startup is ... the Windows Media Player.
