Re: Oiling winds



It is my opinion that oiling any wood (remember, you are probably really
oiling a coating not the wood) is doing more harm than good. The typical
oils used will crosslink to create a mess that can be difficult to remove.
Many coatings are alcohol based, so oiling does not "feed" it. And if the
coating is an oil based varnish, the coating has already crosslinked so
the oil has no effect. Bare wood can becomed "clogged" with the oil not
allowing it to be as hydroscopic as it needs to be.
