Our department, Preservation and Special Services, was formed in July
1996 as a department in the Central Libraries by combining end processing
(marking of spines, attachment of gift plates, etc.) from the Catalog
Department, bindery prep, book repair, patron services (assisting patrons with
periodicals location), and other "special services" from Special Services.
Special Services formerly was a unit (not a department) in the Central
Libraries. We are not part of Technical Services.
Since becoming a department, some "special services" have been shifted to
other areas in the Central Libraries (assigning of study carrels,
collecting money from microform machines).
We are strong in our book repair unit, and have a paraprofessional
"Preservation Specialist" who supervises and works in the Preservation Workroom.
The marking duties blend in well with the rest of the new department.
Some of the marking applications overlap with bindery prep (preparation of
plastic binds, rebound books, security strips).
We provide valuable patron service in periodicals, since we are located
on the current and bound periodicals floor.
