RLG would like to announce the release of Volume 2, Issue 1 of
RLG DigiNews, the web-based, quarterly newsletter available at:
http://www.rlg.org/preserv/diginews/
This issue marks the second publishing year of RLG DigiNews, but
also a few changes for the publication. First, the February 15
issue will be the first of *six* issues for 1998 (an increase
of 2 issues), made possible through a sponsorship by the Council on
Library and Information Resources (CLIR). Readers will also notice
the new masthead, logo and color scheme, a change made to
incorporate the Research Libraries Group's new logo. We hope you
enjoy these exciting new changes as we begin the new year and
a new year of RLG DigiNews!
This issue contains a feature article by Michael Lesk, Director,
Information and Intelligent Systems, National Science Foundation.
His article, "Finding Pictures," discusses current research into
the indexing of images through mechanized image analysis. Lesk's
article contains several images to demonstrate and illustrate the
concepts being explored. The issue also contains a technical feature
article, "What is MTF ... and Why Should You Care?" by Don Williams,
Image Scientist, Eastman Kodak Company. In his article,
Williams introduces the concept and use of Modulation Transfer
Function (MTF) and explains why it is a superior way of specifying
spatial resolution compared to other methods such as dots-per-inch
(dpi) or visual bar target readings.
Rounding out this first issue of Volume 2 is a current calendar of
events, project announcements, relevant web sites and Part II of a
FAQ about the array of free digital preservation newsletters and
journals.
