[PADG:1083] RE: reinforcement head/tail
Here in the UK I know of only one Bindery (Birmingham university)
that still adds the cord. This is really only a house style for them.
We have not added a cord in our own bindery here at Newcastle
University for several years now and I would agree that it does not
seem to add any reinforcement to the spine due to the strength of
the new buckrams. the only thing that I could add is that it would
prevent some dust/dirt falling into the "hollow" spine of the book but
whether this is a problem or not is yours to decide.

Subject: [PADG:1080] reinforcement head/tail
VCU is preparing an RFP for bid. We have been advised by our current
binder that reinforcement of the head and tail with cord, ribbon, or
something similar is passe. I have been told that "no binders currently
provide this service" and "no clients are asking for it."
I am interested to know if any current contracts call for reinforcement.
If you have discontinued requiring it, why?
Thanks for your input.
Patricia
