[PADG:374] RE: Housing oversize atlas

Kevin, when we get an item like that, we most often construct a drop-front
box for it. We use our regular "archival" corrugated board, but then insert
another sheet of corrugated board in the bottom tray; that 2nd sheet is
oriented "cross-grain" in relation to the bottom tray. If warranted by the
item's size and weight, we'll do the same in the top tray. Sometimes, we
even double-wall the sides, but I doubt this item would warrant that. So
far, our biggest challenge was a 65-pound scrapbook, and the cross-grain
approach worked very well. We have written up basic instructions for our
corrugated boxes (without the "cross-grain" approach); if you want a copy,
e-mail me directly -- since the listserv can't accept attachments.

Good luck --

Subject: [PADG:366] Housing oversize atlas

We have an unbound very large atlas for which we are trying to determine
the best housing. It is about 125 sheets printed on both sides,
approximately 20 x 32 x 1.25 in. and quite heavy. There are 14 pre-made
holes along the left margin. It is a unified atlas, so we want to keep
it all together. We would like a housing that provided some level of
support for whenever this would be moved, but with its size and weight,
I'm not sure what would be best. There is some interest in having it
bound, but our library binder doesn't seemed too thrilled at that
prospect. Because of the pre-made holes, I've wondered whether a simple
post binding incorporating a single board back cover and a hinged front
cover might suffice.

How would the collective wisdom on this list deal with a large items
such as this?
