Re: [ARSCLIST] LP RECORD STORAGE

Yes,

I certainly would not recommend the shelves that I bought at the Home Despot a few years back for use in a storage locker. The vertical posts are probably rigid and strong enough, but the shelf was cheap chipboard which has started to cave in under the weight of some boxes of old Gramophone and Fanfare mags. No way to even accommodate 12" discs with the flange at the edge, anyway. Other "steel" shelves have buckled loaded with just a few 78 albums. No, I meant something like:

I'm sure there are plenty of places out there with similar. I see a lot of wire shelving like this:

that seems to be strong enough, but I assume that records would not prosper without a solid surface beneath them. Any experience to the contrary? I suppose one could lay Masonite on these shelves, but that seems rather involved.

As far as the Ivar from Ikea, I have serious doubts that any product from that source having the ability to hold a full load of vinyl. I have plenty of respect for the products that I happen to have gotten from them in the last couple of weeks (some drop leaf kitchen counters, a tall and narrow bookcase, a two-step step stool [good for reaching the top shelves of your LP collection] and a futon couch) but the materials and means of construction, in my experience, are just not that heavy-duty. Can anyone that has these units attest that they have had them filled to capacity (is there any other way?) for several years and they are still holding up? I'd love to believe that this is an option, but I remain a skeptic.

I'm surprised no one has suggested metal industrial shelving. It ain't
beautiful, but it is strong enough to support vinyl or shellac in large
quantities and doesn't cost nearly as much as a decent wood set up. I
have not done an exhaustive search, but this is one example of what
comes up if you put "industrial metal shelving" into Metacrawler (or
your own favorite search):

You need to put in some sort of bookends, I assume, since the ends are
open, but this seems to be a good no-nonsense approach.

I didn't follow the above link...but I did once own (sad story) some
actual vintage "Industrial shelving" and the flaw noted IS a problem.

Make sure it is actual heavy-duty industrial metal shelving, and NOT
the stamped-from-sheet-metal equivalent often sold under that description!
I bought some of the latter at Canadian Tire (NOT for 78's!) and the
maximum load figures thereof suggested that filling them with 78's
(10" discs weigh in at about 70 lbs./lineal foot of records, and 12"
records are 1.44 times as heavy!) would produce a rather spectacular
collapse!
